Airsac Mite Infestation?

Airsac mite (Stenostoma Tracheacolum) is an internal parasite that lives in airways and air sacs. Infestation causes local irritation and secondary respiratory infections. Heavy infestations cause breathing difficulties, wheezing, open mouth breathing and death in fledglings and adult birds. Canaries and Gouldians are particularly susceptible to airsac mite infestations (respiratory acariasis).

Treatment: All mite infections must include an insecticide, S76 (water based Ivermectin) for the bird administered topically (directly onto the skin) or orally (added to the drinking or bath water). Additionally the nest and aviary must be cleaned and disinfected with a pyrethrin spray ( Control or Pestex ) on the second day of S76 treatment.
Note: The use of a pyrethrin pesticide on the cage and surrounding surface areas during treatment is to kill airsac mites in their different life cycle stages. This treatment must be repeated each week for three weeks to break the lifecycle of the mite. S76 is safe for breeding birds. Pyrethrin-based products are safe to use on birds.
