"I just wanted to drop you a note about a recent shipment I got from you. I got finch seed, bee pollen, bird bath and herbal salad and had asked for some nesting samples. The shipment came very quickly, everything was there with plenty of nesting material. I have just one pair of lady gouldians right now. I put the nesting material in their cage, a little of each kind. Well, they love it all!!! The male finch was a very busy beaver selecting and placing all of the material into his bamboo nest. He has created a very elaborate nest covering not just the bottom of the nest but installing it overhead as well. They are quite happy with it. Thank you so much. which nest design does your finch build?

There are a number of nesting materials that can be used for finches that you could gather from your yard-Pampas Grass plumes, Long Pine needles, moss, cotton pods, feathers etc. If you choose to gather your own nesting material, be very sure that it is free of any insects, mold or fungus.
I prefer the bermuda grass for three reasons. First, It is Natural! Second, it is sold as feed for horses, therefore the farmers have made certain that it is dry before baling and that it is free of mold and fungus which would adversely harm the horses eating it.
Third, the finches can easily manipulate it in making their preferred nest. Some of them want their nest box to be a complete dome inside and the long grass blades allows them to accomplish this. Other pairs prefer just a nice soft cushion on the bottom of the box and will, therefore, remove most of the grass that I initially placed in their box.
